OVERVIEW
Follow a beach highway to discover cliffs of coloured sands, freshwater creeks, impressive sandblows, volcanic headlands and a famous shipwreck.
This drive along the Island's east coast follows the famous Seventy-Five Mile Beach, which is a gazetted highway.
Itoffers the opportunity to appreciate the incredible diversity of the Island's World Heritage value.
Starting from the K'gari Research Station, it takes in several well-known attractions.
Please note: Due to tide times, it is not possible to visit all listed points of interest in one day and return to the research station. Choose a selection of sites, or stay overnight at a northern site to incorporate all locations.
Head north along Seventy-Five Mile Beach
Optional stop at Eurong Village(accommodation, fuel, phone, store, police).
Head north along the beach. Take a recommended detour to view sandblows and Lake Wabby by turning left at Cornwell's Break Road. Drive 2.4km to:
Return to the beach and continue north. Poyungan Rocks are an obstacle for drivers. Use the bypass track as needed. Drive for about 30 minutes to reach the car park for Rainbow Gorge and Kirra Sandblow.
A 1.9km (approximately 40 minutes) circuit walk will take you to:
Continue north along the beach. Take care at Yidney Rocks, about 2.5km north. Use the bypass track as needed.
Optional stop at Happy Valley(Ambulance, fuel and general store).
Travel about 5km past Happy Valley to:
Toilet facilities are available here.
Continue north for five minutes to reach the Island's famous shipwreck:
Be aware that aircraft use this part of the beach as a landing strip.
Optional detour: Head north and take the Woralie Road turnoff and travel for about 4km to reach:
Return to the beach, travel a short distance north to view some of the Island's spectacular coloured sand formations at:
Continuing north, travel along Cathedral Beach and admire this 18km stretch of coloured sand cliffs. The best formations are found between the Dundabara Camping Area and Wyuna Creek at:
Travel north for approximately 18km to the Island's striking headland of:
Continue north along the Indian Head bypass road and stop at the Middle Rocks car park to reach:
From Champagne Pools take the Waddy Point Bypass to reach:
Return south to UniSC's Research Station. Check tide conditions.
