Walk to the lookout to view the deep blue-green waters of Lake Wabby and impressive Hammerstone Sandblow below.

The Lake Wabby Lookout has breathtaking views over the sandblow, the lake and out to the Coral Sea. The walk to the lookout is about 450m from the carpark.

Lake Wabby

The lake is nestled between tall forests and shifting sands and at 11.5m is the deepest lake on the Island.

It is one of the world's best examples of both a window and a barrage lake and hasbeen formed by the damming action of massive Hammerstone Sandblow.

It supports 12 fish species, more than any other lake on the Island.

  • Never dive, run, jump, skid, toboggan, backflip or slide down the sand dune into Lake Wabby. Serious injuries-spinals resulting in paraplegia-have occurred. The water is shallower than it appears and the sand on the bottom is very hard.
  • Swimming or diving is not recommended as lakes can have hidden obstacles such as submerged logs and branches. There are no lifeguards on the Island.
Hammerstone Sandblow

The sandblow rises over 65m above sea level and stretches almost 2.5km inland.

Advancing 1m each year, it is slowly engulfing the lake and surrounding forest. In several years time, Lake Wabby will have disappeared.

The area has toilet facilities.
