The Pinnacles

OVERVIEW

Protect these fragile formations. It is illegal to climb on or collect coloured sands. Penalties apply.

These spectacular coloured sand cliffs have been sculpted by the wind and rain blowing in off the Pacific Ocean.

Located 5km north of the Maheno, these majestic sand cliffs can be viewed from the beach. Colours include shades of red, orange, gold, brown and white.

The different hues are a result of iron oxide staining the sand over thousandsof years.

The striking formations are created by wind and rain eroding the Island's sand mass, exposing the underlying, more compact sand below.

Direct morning sunlight brings out the best colours in the cliffs.

Never carve or dig holes in sand cliffs. They are not stable and can collapse without warning. Serious injury or death could occur.
