OVERVIEW
K'gari's coloured sand formations create a striking contrast with the vast white ocean beach for a 18km stretch along Cathedral Beach.
Named after their resemblance to Gothic European cathedrals, The Cathedrals are a stretch of remarkable coloured cliffs of pink, red, yellow and orange, withstreaks of blackened iron oxide. These spectacular sculptures emerge where wind and rain erode the sandmass, exposing the older core.
The best formations face the beach between the Dundubara camping area and Wyuna Creek and are ideally viewed in morning light.
The fenced Dundubara camping area has shower and toilet facilities and fresh water.
Red Canyon, 3km north of Dundubara, is another striking example of the Island's coloured sands, with its array of deep red and brown tones created by iron-rich minerals staining the sands over thousands of years.
