Scenic Western Drive

OVERVIEW

Experience the cool respite of towering rainforests and the crystal clear waters of Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) on a journey to the rugged western side of the Island.

Drive through changing vegetation to the heart of the Island at Central Station. Continue to Pile Valley, where majestic Satinay trees defy nature and grow to staggering heights, and on to the famous perched lake, Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora). The route ends on the west coast.

1. K'gari Research Station

From the station, follow Dillingham's Road.

2. Central Station

A day-use area has toilet and picnic facilities, and a fenced camping ground.

3. Wanggoolba Creek

Follow signs for approximately 8.6km to reach Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) stopping on the way at:

Follow old forestry routes through cool, shady rainforests to:

5. Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie)

The area has camping, toilet and picnic facilities.

Drive for about 30 minutes to reach the rugged western side by headingeast on Lake McKenzie Road and turning left on to Northern Road. Turn left after about 6km on to Cromwell's Road to reach:

6. Kingfisher Bay Resort

Amenities include barge to River Heads, accommodation, fuel, a general store, eateries, bottle shop and 4WD hire.

From Kingfisher Bay, follow a section of the Fraser Island Great Walk to reach the historical sites of:

7. McKenzie's Jetty
8. Z Force Commando School
