Satinay or Fraser Island Turpentine

OVERVIEW

The Satinay tree is very similar to turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera) but has larger leaves and fruits.

The Satinayoccurs mainly on K'gari.

Small plots are also found on the mainland in the Cooloola area.

Large examples of this tree may be seen growing at the Central Station picnic area. The tree can grow to 40m tall and the trunk may reach 1m in diameter.

It has long been used as a very valuable timber resource and is particularly useful for marine pylons. It is fire and termite resistant.

Satinay timber was used in the construction of the Suez Canal but is no longer logged on the Island. The Indigenous word for this species is "Peebang".
