Discover history and exceptional nature in one place at Central Station, set in lush rainforest alongside the upper waters of stunning Wanggoolba Creek.
Sitting in the central high dunes of the Island, Central Station is surrounded by mature Kauri Pines, Bunya Pines, Satinays and Flooded Gums.
This beautiful rainforest area offers a chance to reflect on the Island's past, World Heritage value and cultural significance. Information panels explain the Island's history and its extraordinary flora and fauna.
Central Station is a departure point for a number of walks. A highlight is theWanggoolba Creek Boardwalk circuit (0.9km). Other walks include Pile Valley circuit (4.6km), the Lake McKenzie circuit (17.8km) and Basin Lake (5.6km return).
Do not swim or walk in the creek as it has cultural and environmental significance. Respect Country.
A day-use area has toilet and picnic facilities. There is also a fenced camping ground.
K'gari was logged for its magnificent timber for almost 130 years until operations ceased in 1991. This large clearing at Central Station was the headquarters of Forestry Department operations from 1920 until the late 1950s. Around 30 houses and a school were once located here for the logging families who lived on the Island.
