Drive through ever-changing forests to discover beautiful perched lakes, towering rainforests and fascinating history.
This drive offers an opportunity to explore the world's largest perched lake, Lake Boomanjin, and the red-stained waters of Lake Benaroon.
Observe changes in the Island's vegetation, with species such as Banksia and She-oak in open forests and woodlands giving way to forests ofScribbly Gum and Blackbutt as the route heads into the higher dunes in the centre of the Island.
Starting at Dilli Village, follow Dillingham's Road towards Central Station. Take a right turn onto Birrabeen Road and drive for 10.5km to reach:
Facilities include toilets, camping ground and fenced eating area.
Return to Birrabeen Road, and drive through open forests and Wallum Banksia woodlands.
The red waters of Lake Benaroon, which can only be reached on foot, can been seen through the trees.
Drive for 10km from Lake Boomanjin to reach:
Facilities include toilets and picnic area.
Return to Birrabeen Road and follow the Southern Lakes Road.
A day-use area has toilet and picnic facilities, and a fenced camping ground.
Return via the inland roads to K'gari Research Station.
Alternative route: Extend your trip by following Eurong Road through coastal forests to reach the Island's stunning eastern beach.
NOTE:This section is tide dependent. Avoid driving on the beach two hours either side of high tide.
The small township has a resort, bakery, bar,public phone and a well-stocked grocery store with fuel, ice, camping and fishing supplies.
Head south along Seventy-Five Mile Beach to return to the research station.
Please be respectful when visiting many of these destinations as they are culturally significant.
