Lake Boomanjin

OVERVIEW

Did you know - The lake sits more than 70m above sea level and is surrounded by dunes that rise to 120m.

Lake Boomanjin is the world’s largest perched dune lake.

Covering about 200 hectares, Lake Boomanjin is an outstanding natural wonder. Despite its size it remains relatively shallow.

Ripples in its sandy base create a mosaic of patterns beneath deep tea-coloured waters, which contrast with its sandy white shoreline.

Three creeks that feed the lake pass through wallum swamps that leach tannins, intensifying its unusual red tint.

Its extensive shores are fringed by large, gnarled Melaleucas, their twisted roots exposed by natural falls in sand or water levels.

Facilities

The area has shower and toilet facilities and a dingo proof fenced day area. These are located on the north side of the lake.

A fenced campground is located in open forest between the carpark on Birrabeen Road and Lake Boomanjin. Bring a gas/fuel stove and drinking water.

The lake is 6.2km north of K'gari Research Station on the K'gari Great Walk, or 10km north-west on Birrabeen Rd (4WD only).

Swimming or diving is not recommended as lakes can have hidden obstacles such as submerged logs and branches. There are no lifeguards on the Island.
