UniSC employs several innovative methods to measure and manage its low carbon energy usage. One of the key initiatives is the installation of over 6,000 solar panels across the campus, which generate approximately 2.1 megawatts of power.
This solar energy is used to power a “water battery” system, which stores chilled water for use in the air conditioning system. This approach significantly reduces the university’s reliance on traditional electricity sources, cutting energy use by about a third. The system is monitored in real-time, allowing for adjustments based on weather conditions and energy demand, ensuring optimal energy consumption and minimal carbon emissions.
Additionally, UniSC’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its comprehensive Carbon Management Plan, which outlines strategies for achieving carbon neutrality by 2029. The plan includes detailed tracking of energy consumption and carbon emissions, with regular reporting to ensure transparency and accountability.
The university also collaborates with Veolia, a global leader in renewable energy solutions, to maintain and optimize its energy infrastructure. This partnership not only supports the university’s sustainability goals but also provides valuable learning opportunities for students through site visits, guest lectures, and hands-on projects.
