Considering university? Wondering where to start? Use this quick checklist to guide you as you choose your degree and make your decision to study.
Step one
Find your why
Before you look at programs and courses, think about your Why.
Your Why might not be a specific job - but sometimes it is!
Your Why could be:
- making a difference in your community (or world!);
- helping others;
- advancing your current career; or
- exploring a new path or direction.
When you choose your program, ask yourself, will this help me reach my Why?
Step 2
Do your career research
Now is the time to think about where you want your study at university to take you.
Many online resources can help you explore job and industry trends and identify the skills your need for jobs in your desired field.
Here are a few we recommend to get you started:
- yourcareer.gov.au
- myfuture.edu.au
- labourmarketinsights.gov.au
- Jobs boards like Seek or Indeed
Look into the programs or courses that can help you achieve your goals.
Step 3
Think about how you'll study
Choose the best way for you to study. UniSC offers flexible options to help you fit study into your life.
If you have family, work, or other commitments consider studying part-time or online.
Many programs at UniSC are available online.
Programs that are not fully online use a mix of online and in-person teaching. This may mean you only need to be on campus for a few hours each week, depending on how many courses you take.
Step 4
Start exploring programs
The UniSC website has detailed information about programs available.
We call subjects ‘courses’ and the degree you study is a ‘program’.
Here are some key points to consider:
- What courses will you study?
Each program contains courses, which make up the program structure. Each course has an outline. This outline shows the number of class hours each week, the topics you'll learn and any assessment items. - What study or experience do you need to get into this program?
Each program has its own entry requirements. You must complete these before you are accepted. You may also need to look at other study or mandatory requirements before starting. The Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP) is a good way to meet entry requirements and get ready for university. Plus, it's free. - When can you start, and how long does it take?
Some programs begin in certain semesters. Check key dates, program duration and the start date. The duration listed on the website is the minimum time it will take.
Not sure if you want to commit to a full three or four-year Bachelor degree? Consider a shorter program like a Diplomas and Associate Degrees. You can try studying in a field and often earn credit towards larger programs, depending on what and where you study.
Now, you should be down to one or two key programs you want to apply for.
Step 5
Ask and apply
