Data Analytics for Variation Reduction with an Introduction to Machine Learning and AI Course

Date: 1-3 October 2024
Location:  Forestry South Australia Training Rooms, 170-174 Wireless Road West, Mount Gambier South Australia
Course Goal

The goal of the course is to enhance the participants’ knowledge of data analytics, statistical process control (SPC), data visualization, and techniques that lead to variation reduction. A highlight of the course will be an ‘Introduction to Machine Learning Concepts’. The course will benefit a company by promoting lower operational targets, which lower costs.

Course Structure

The course covers two days with approximately 16 hours of instruction with a Mill visit on the third day (optional and an additional charge). Participants enjoy a small class size of 16 to 20 students. Students are not required to bring a laptop, but concepts will be applied in Excel, JMP, Minitab, and R. Students will enjoy hands-on exercises such as ‘Deming’s Bead Box’ (demonstrates natural variation of a system); ‘Deming’s Funnel Experiment’ (illustrates inducing variation by over-adjusting a system, and group case studies.

Course History

The ‘National Centre for Timber Durability & Design Life’ has taught data analytics courses in 2019/2022 to more than 15 companies. The first course was held at Mt. Gambier, SA, and the second was held on the at Sippy Downs QLD.

Instructor

Timothy Young is a Professor Emeritus in School of Natural Resources and Interim Director of the ‘Data Science Institute for Machine learning and AI’ at the University of Tennessee. He has PhD in Statistics and MS in Statistics. He teaches successful industry courses at internationally locations in data analytics, modeling, etc. See more details on Tim's LinkedIn account.
