Hook Point

OVERVIEW

The eastern beach from Hook Point to Sandy Cape is the main highway for the Island. Dingoes frequent this area.

Hook Point is the southern-most point of K’gari and a gateway to the Island.

Island access

A barge service to Hook Point departs continuously from Inskip Point (approximately 13km from Rainbow Beach) between 6am - 5.15pm daily. The trip takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

This is the closest barge to UniSC's Research Station, 24km north of Hook Point. The turn-off is sign-posted on the beach.

The eastern beach from Hook Point to Sandy Cape is the main highway for the Island. Always travel on the beach as close as possible to low tide. Avoid travelling at high tide. The Hook Point inland track offers an alternative to the beach highway.

Fraser Island Great Walk

There is an access track linking Hook Point to UniSC's K'gari Research Station, which is the southern start of the K'gari Great Walk. This mostly flat walking track hugs the western side of Jabiru Swamp.

From the barge landing, cross low-lying sand plains in the shade of gums and Bloodwoods flanking the swamp. The canopy gradually thins and wet areas of Melaleuca swamps dot the landscape.

There is no fresh water on this section of track.

Inskip Peninsula

The peninsula between Hook Point and Inskip Point is a stunning, narrow sandy finger of land built up by wind and waves. It formsa natural breakwater at the entrance to Tin Can Inlet and Great Sandy Strait.

The peninsula offers excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife, especially birds, turtles and dolphins. Flocks of resident and migratory shorebirds are often seen resting and roosting along the coastal beaches.
