USC graduate puts engineering skills to work for Moreton Bay

Recent USC Mechanical Engineering graduate Harry Peet is now managing major projects aimed at improving and streamlining services at one of Australia’s largest councils.

Harry, 24, who graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours), is employed as the Smart Cities Project Officer at Moreton Bay Regional Council.

He said a big part of his role involved providing technical advice to stakeholders to support the successful delivery of Smart Cities project initiatives.

“Connecting with the community to better provide what they need is something I am really passionate about,” the Warner resident and former Genesis Christian College student said.

“I enjoy connecting with people on a personal level and creating solutions to everyday problems.”

Harry said his USC degree, which included a minor in Environmental Studies, had helped him develop the skills and knowledge he needed for his role in the council’s Innovation Team.

These included understanding mechanical systems, project management and out-of-the-box thinking.

“It’s about utilising this knowledge in new and different ways to reach the best solutions,” he said.

“My ability to research and write is also important and has opened my eyes to the various technology and smart programs that can be utilised in a different way to benefit the community.”

Harry said he chose to study USC’s Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) because he loved the idea of smaller classroom environments with greater access to teaching staff.

“I enjoyed the diverse range of subjects, as well as the different options for further study and the learning opportunities that were offered,” he said.

“I also appreciated how hands-on the learning approach was, with field trips and opportunities to learn from practical experiences.”
