Study journey takes Beke from Germany to Fraser Coast

A decision to explore Australia has led to a brand-new life and career focus for former Germany bookkeeper Beke Koehn, who graduated recently from USC.

Beke,29, who completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) at USC’s Fraser Coast campus, recently began working as a financial assistant with Multicultural Australia, an organisation that delivers essential migrant services and advocates for multiculturalism.

Beke said it was an ideal job that allowed her to combine her interest in accounting with her passion for social enterprise by working for an organisation committed to improving community outcomes.

Beke said she had always had a knack for numbers and had completed a diploma in office management and worked as a bookkeeper in Germany before an overseas adventure ended with her enrolling in her accounting degree at USC Fraser Coast.

“After travelling through Australia for about two years to improve my English language skills. and falling in love with the country, I knew I had to build upon my existing skills to enter the accounting industry,” Beke said.

It was not until her final year of study she developed an affinity for social enterprise.

“I discovered my interest in entrepreneurship and social enterprises while researching a strategic management assignment, so I attended Sippy Downs campus for my final semester to complete an entrepreneurial subject not offered through Fraser Coast.”

Beke said she thoroughly enjoyed her study experience at USC.

“I chose the campus at Hervey Bay mainly because of the smaller classes which gave every student the chance to gain a wonderful learning experience with direct feedback and support from teaching staff,” she said.

“Lecturer in Accounting Dr Ratna Paudyal in particular provided outstanding support, not only during my degree, but also with seeking opportunities for work experience and employment,” she said.

“I cannot stress enough how important it is to connect with other students. As Dr Paudyal likes to say, the connections you establish throughout your time at university will last for the rest of your life.”

Beke said she was enjoying applying the critical thinking, time management and problem-solving skills she gained during her degree to her new role.

Applications are open to study at USC in 2022.
