USC looks like it will be a force to be reckoned with after recently winning its first fixture in the Universities Rugby League Queensland (URLQ) competition.
The fledgeling USC Spartans team withstood a strong start by the University of Queensland, which led 12-0 after just 10 minutes, to claim an impressive 32-24 victory in late April.
Team head coach Matthew O’Donnell said he was pleased by his team’s resilience to rebound from the early onslaught and then outplay UQ in Brisbane.
He said the team was looking forward to its first home match on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 12 May.
The public are welcome to watch USC take on the Australian Catholic University on USC’s main rugby field at Sippy Downs, with kick-off at 7.30pm.
O’Donnell said USC had planned to join the URLQ last year, but the competition was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
The 2021 URLQ season will be played over the next four months, with USC hosting further home matches on 26 May, 21 July and 18 August ahead of the finals series in September.
Along with USC, UQ and ACU, the five-team competition also includes teams from QUT and Griffith University.
