Having grown up in Caboolture, Lincoln Nass holds such a deep appreciation for Moreton Bay that he plans to channel his engineering studies at USC into improving the region.
“I’m really passionate about developing and growing the local area and seeing the region where I grew up become a better place to live,” said Lincoln, 18, who graduated from St Columban’s College last year.
After deciding to study a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) at USC’s Moreton Bay campus at Petrie, he took a drive with his grandfather to discuss the region and how it is used by the people of Moreton Bay.
“We talked about water, roads, electricity and the key infrastructure needed to grow and connect the different areas, and the Caboolture West area was an area of particular interest,” said Lincoln, whose father and brothers work in construction and carpentry.
“I would very much like to be a part of the growth of the region, from structural engineering to residential and commercial planning … anything to do with people and what they do in their daily lives, where they live and work.”
Lincoln’s strong interest in people also sees him involved in several community activities, including mentoring children with special needs in a modified rugby training program.
“I take pride in seeing the players improve their communication skills and work as a team, and enjoy seeing the enthusiasm on their faces,” he said.
Lincoln also volunteers for a school Christian group that helps students explore their beliefs and reflect on life’s meaning.
“I think it definitely helps to stop and think about your values before you choose what you want to do with your future,” he said.
Lincoln earlier this month was one of eight new students at USC Moreton Bay to receive Moreton Bay Regional Council Scholarships worth $8,000 for each year of study.
Criteria for these scholarships include demonstrated leadership skills, demonstrated financial need, and the academic potential to achieve education and career goals.
“I am thrilled to receive a scholarship, because it will help me really focus on learning what I’m passionate about – building Moreton Bay into the future,” Lincoln said.
