New technologies that are being embraced by artists around the world are highlighted in a free online “mini lecture” developed to inform the Moreton Bay community.

USC Senior Lecturer in Design Dr Uwe Terton has focused on 3D printing, drone technology, projection mapping and augmented reality in a 30-minute presentation available online now as part of the Moreton Minds talk series, a partnership between Moreton Bay Region Libraries and USC.

“Artists have been inspired by new technologies in many ways, creating stunning art that has the potential to change the way we perceive our world, and art in general, by stimulating all the senses,” Dr Terton said.

“The boom in 3D printed art has been building for several years. In fact, it seems no corner of the art world remains untouched by 3D printing's growing influence, from architecture to music.

“We also have drone art, which includes works that are either created using drone technology or in some way address or depict the drone.

“Then there’s projection mapping, also known as video mapping, and spatial augmented reality, which uses projection technology to turn objects, that are often irregularly shaped, into display surfaces for video projection.”

Dr Terton said smartphones and the public’s increasing familiarity with augmented reality apps were beginning to have a tangible impact on how art was both created and displayed.
