A love of sport and a desire to help young people have inspired the career of Burpengary 23-year-old Mitchell Fraser, who this month graduated from USC with a Master of Teaching (Secondary).

Mitchell now works at Murrumba State Secondary College, where he teaches Health and Physical Education, Maths and Science.

He was one of 19 people in USC’s first graduating cohort of the Master, which replaced a previous postgraduate education program to meet new accreditation standards. The cohort had a 100 percent employment rate.

Mitchell is drawing on his 2017 USC Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, as well as his latest study, to contribute to the innovative school community at Murrumba Downs in the Moreton Bay Region.

“I love that through my work I am able to make a positive impact on young people’s lives every day just by doing my job well,” he said.

“Teaching is a great learning experience and I’m also participating in and helping organise events like school camps, sporting carnivals and coaching.

“Every student has different needs and I am constantly evaluating how to improve the management of my lessons, through curriculum, classroom activities and the way information is delivered.”

Mitchell also previously completed a certificate and a diploma in fitness. He was a keen sportsman at Glasshouse Christian College, where he was a foundation student.

He competed in AFL, track and field, and cricket, representing the Sunshine Coast region as a batsman in Year 12 at the state titles.

He attributed his career success to an excellent combination of theoretical and practical learning in both USC degrees.

“It’s a University where tutors and lecturers take interest in your studies and you’re not just making up class numbers,” he said.

“My classes were small enough to know my cohort and the courses were very flexible. And I didn’t have to fight city traffic.”
