Learning essential classroom skills has helped a Toowoomba graduate become a physical education and science teacher at Dysart State High School.

Melanie Stevens, 23, who attended The Glennie School, recently received a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“My course subjects included the essential skills of classroom management and making guided judgements and both of these have helped me in my work,” she said.

“We also had two work placements, so I was able to get insight from teachers about what the job would be like.”

Melanie chose USC because she had heard positive comments about the facilities and lecturers.

“I liked the course lecturers and class sizes. You get to know other people in your course and you’re on a first-name basis with the lecturers,” she said.

“USC also had many great facilities.”

Melanie said she was enjoying her teaching role and plans to become a Head of Department for Physical Education.
