A Sunshine Coast skin cancer expert will feature on TV for a kids’ science show next week.

Professor Michael Kimlin from the University of the Sunshine Coast will discuss sun exposure with presenters on Channel 9’s BrainBuzz, in an episode that will air on Wednesday 25 April at 8am.

“I took our UV camera along to the studios and we looked at the sun damage of the presenters,” Professor Kimlin said.

“We found that they showed signs of premature sun damage caused by their sun exposure.”

Professor Kimlin is one of the world’s leading scientists in skin cancer prevention and Foundation Chair in Cancer Prevention with Cancer Council Queensland.

He said the on-air experiment yielded an important message for young audiences.

“We talked about sun risk and using sun protection to stop the damage and the important message was that even young people can show signs of skin damage,” he said.

“It’s great that we can engage kids on an important topic in a way that is also entertaining.”
