A USC Law student has been selected to represent Australia at a prestigious global negotiation competition in Japan on 18-19 November.

Callum Lee, 23, of Gympie, is the only university law student from Queensland chosen for Australia’s 22-member team to compete at the Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition in Tokyo.

Australia is the only team from outside Asia to participate in Japan’s annual international mooting competition.

Callum, who flies out on Tuesday 14 November, said it would be a great opportunity to gain global experience while studying his USC Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce (Financial Planning).

“Australia is the current champion, after last year winning the overall and best negotiation prizes, so we’re keen to defend the title,” said the 2011 Cooloola Christian College graduate.

“My team has been honing its legal skills and finalising preparations for this simulated negotiation and arbitration.

“It involves two fictitious companies, the Red and Blue Corporations, and requires competitors to ‘become’ the executives of the company.”

He said he was also looking forward to learning more about international commercial contracting within Japanese business and legal practices.

Callum, who is president of the USC Law Students’ Association and a member of USC’s Student Representative Council, won another international negotiating competition in India last year with fellow USC student David Knobel.

He has won awards for his academic excellence and his commitment to boosting the USC community, and will complete an Australian National University subject in conjunction with the competition in Japan.
