Amy Kadel of Narangba is now breaking news as a print journalist after graduating with a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Amy, 20, recently started work for the Stanthorpe Border Post on Queensland’s Granite Belt, where she is responsible for sourcing news stories, writing articles and taking photographs for the bi-weekly newspaper.

The Northpine Christian College graduate said she was delighted to have received a role in the competitive industry after completing an internship with another newspaper in the APN News & Media network as part of her USC degree.

“I'm really enjoying living and working in Stanthorpe,” she said. “It's really different to home but it's been a really welcoming community.

“I do a lot of writing and interviews, as well as sub-editing our paper after the editors have seen it to make sure all the facts are right.

“I aim to eventually work for a major publication based in either Sydney or Melbourne.”

Amy, who is aiming to become an editor, said the real-world experience she gained in her degree had helped her hit the ground running in her first professional role.

“By undertaking an internship, I found that I learned a lot more about the skills I needed in the workforce,” she said. “It helped me understand more about what I wanted to focus on once I graduated.

“I loved how helpful the tutors all were at USC. All of them had experience in the field.”
