A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate from Gympie is now relishing the opportunity to create a range of multi-media marketing material that will encourage people to pursue higher education.
Ben Waugh, 21, who graduated this month with a Bachelor of Design and Communication with a double major in Graphic Design and Creative Advertising, has secured a contract as a graphic designer in the marketing team of TAFE Queensland Brisbane.
Being able to work each day in his chosen field of design is the favourite aspect of the job for the former James Nash State High School student.
“I love design and having the opportunity to work for such a large organisation offers me the chance to learn so much and gain experience in something new every day,” he said.
Ben said he would like to eventually work and travel overseas and one day run his own design and advertising agency.
He said the Bachelor of Design and Communication had given him great insights into how the industry operated and the hands-on experience in computer-based design provided him with specialist skills that he now applied daily in his new role.
Ben said a highlight of his degree was being selected to attend a 10-day study tour of Hong Kong to see behind the scenes of the global advertising market.
“We visited some of the world's largest advertising agencies and met with leading advertising professionals, which was an incredible opportunity,” he said.
He said choosing to study at USC was a logical step for him.
“USC was close to my family, it had a modern campus, and of course, was close to the beach,” he said. “It is a great place to study as both the students and staff are always friendly and outgoing which makes the entire study experience more enjoyable.”
