The DDC conducts vital research by working with governments, businesses and not-for-profit organisations to inform new initiatives and policies for greater protection of ecosystems. The information that is gathered on the presence and health of wildlife is key to decision-making about animal habitats in Australia and potentially, around the world.

The team are experts in:

• Developing and utilising novel scientific methods to provide accurate and contemporary data, advice and analytical decision-making tools needed by government, not-for-profit organisations and businesses in support of focussed, effective and efficient management initiatives
• Collaborating with other organisations to leverage and optimise opportunities
• Sharing knowledge and empowering communities to become the custodians of their local wildlife

The DDC aims to extend and broaden its positive impact on wildlife conservation by encouraging and training others to utilise the skills and tools which we have developed for koala conservation.

Some of our innovative tools include:

• Detection dogs
• Drones equipped with thermal cameras and other sensors
• Non-invasive molecular methods including genetics, pathogens, hormones
• Tracking devices including koala collars and ear tags used in koala capture, tracking and management plans

We collaborate with expert wildlife veterinarians to provide in-depth veterinary examinations, comprehensive treatment and care, and develop evidence-based population threat assessments and management plans. Together, our skill sets provide robust data to support informed and effective management.
