Understanding environmental safeguarding of young people in a charitable organisation

Our partnership with the Salvation Army examined the utilisation of environmental/situational criminology theory and practice in safeguarding children within a non-profit, religious organisation. We developed and implemented an audit of the knowledge and confidence of Salvation Army staff and utilised the findings of this audit to develop and evaluate a tailored training package for staff to build knowledge and confidence in this approach. A desk-top review of Salvation Army safeguarding policies and frameworks, in light of recent national and international research and standards, was also undertaken.

Impact

The Salvation Army Safeguarding National team are now equipped to implement environmental/situational criminology theory and practice into their Safeguarding work with children and vulnerable people engaging with the Salvation Army. This learning can also be applied to their policies and frameworks relating to Safeguarding across the organisation.
