Emergency external threat procedure

For all campus emergencies call 5430 1168 or Ext 1168.

If required, DIAL 000 for Emergency Service.

External emergency action
  1. Assess the situation.
  2. Contact SafeUniSC Security Ext 1168 or 5430 1168.
  3. Explain what sort of emergency it is.
  4. Follow instructions given by SafeUniSC Security personnel.
  5. Follow the standard procedures for that type of emergency.

Examples: Storm or tempest (violent winds etc), flood, earthquake, car fire or bushfire.

Storms
  • Remain in the building and keep well clear of windows.
  • In multi-storey buildings, move to the lower floors.
  • In all buildings, shelter under desks or similar structures that offer protection.
  • Follow the instructions of SafeUniSC Security and/or relevant Emergency Services personnel.
  • Limit the use of mobile phones and encourage others to do the same.
  • Evacuate the building only if instructed to do so by SafeUniSC Security and/or Emergency Services personnel to the nominated Evacuation Assembly Area, and assist with the evacuation of disabled occupants.
  • Do not leave the Evacuation Assembly Area until advised to do so.
Flood
  • Remain in the building and keep well clear of building access points.
  • Follow the instructions of SafeUniSC Security and/or Emergency Services personnel.
  • Switch off any electrical equipment and gas that could be affected by water.
  • Move any chemicals, documents, equipment and valuables to a safe area if time permits.
  • Follow the instructions of SafeUniSC Security and/or Emergency Services personnel to evacuate the building to the nominated Evacuation Assembly Area if required, and assist with the evacuation of disabled occupants.
Earthquake
  • Remain in the building and keep well clear of windows.
  • In multi-storey buildings, move to the lower floors.
  • In all buildings, shelter under desks or similar structures that offer protection.
  • Follow the instructions of SafeUniSC Security and/or relevant Emergency Services personnel.
  • Limit the use of mobile telephones and encourage others to do the same.
  • Evacuate the building only if instructed to do so by SafeUniSC Security and/or Emergency Services personnel, and assist with the evacuation of disabled occupants.
  • Do not leave the Evacuation Assembly Area until advised to do so.
Car fire or bushfire
  • Close all windows and external doors.
  • Remain indoors, or move indoors and await further instructions from SafeUniSC Security and/or Emergency Services personnel.
  • Do not evacuate from the campus or drive vehicles until, or unless directed to do so, by SafeUniSC Security and/or Emergency Services personnel.
