Savindi Caldera

Dr Savindi Caldera’s research serves to transform construction and manufacturing practices, creating innovative lean, green and circular strategies that enable businesses to operate in ways that are good for both the planet and people. As a sustainability researcher, Savindi investigates cleaner production and circular economy opportunities that position sustainability in organisational processes to drive innovation, engagement and resilience. She developed a novel cost-cutting ‘lean and green strategy model’ to move small to medium sized enterprises beyond ad hoc, highly variable and champion based approaches towards sustainable business practices.

Her PhD in Environmental Management (lean and green manufacturing) from the School of Earth, Environmental and Biological Sciences, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) was awarded the QUT Science and Engineering Faculty High Achiever Award, and the prestigious QUT Siganto Foundation Medal enabling her to complete the Harvard University’s Executive Education Program for Sustainability Leadership (2021). In 2022, Savindi completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Circular Economy professional education program to deepen her expertise in the circular economy through technology and material science.

She has over 10 years of experience working with industry and government partners on interdisciplinary projects and has secured research funding of over $ 4 million. Her work with government authorities includes: QLD Departments of Environment, Science and Innovation, Transport and Main Roads, Communities, Housing and Digital Economy; WA Department of Communities, Main Roads; Gold Coast and Townsville City Councils; and, industry partners Stockland, GHD, Arup, BGC, Green Building and Infrastructure Sustainability Councils of Australia. The range of Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc) and industry-based projects focused on construction and demolition waste, social and affordable housing, sustainable procurement and transit-activated corridors.

As an applied researcher, Savindi works on context specific assessment methods for life cycle-related environmental impacts. With current project activities in Samoa, Kiribati and Fiji, Savindi's work is focused on investigating the life-cycle environmental impacts of seaweed supply chains to support nature-based solutions.

She is a recipient of several prestigious early career academic awards, including the Inspector-General of Emergency Management International Women's Day Award (Excellence in Research) 2023, Griffith Highly Commended Award for Excellence in Teaching 2020, Griffith University Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award for Best Sessional Teaching 2019 and 2018 and QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Performance Award 2017. She is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. She is also serving as an Associate Editor in the Journal of Australasian Environmental Management.
