Dr Samuel Phillips is a Molecular Microbiologist with over 20 years of laboratory experience. His experiences cover a wide range of topics including diagnostics, human sexually transmitted infections (STI) transmission, genotyping, and treatments and development of veterinarian vaccines. His work has included development of Quality Assurance programs for human papillomavirus (HPV) within a World Health Organisation (WHO) reference laboratory, multinational pharmaceutical drug trials for the treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoea, effectiveness of the HPV vaccination across Australia, and the development of a Chlamydia vaccine for koalas.
Research interests
Dr Samuel Phillips' research is focused on the treatment of STIs in both humans and animals through the development of alternative therapies for diseases and prevention technologies. His research focus is on HPV and Chlamydia infections, focusing on genotype distribution, pathogen host interactions, antibiotic effectiveness, and vaccine development. His work has involved collaborations in world-first studies into the treatment of both Chlamydial and HPV rectal infections of gay and bisexual men and he has co-led registration efforts for a Chlamydial vaccine for koalas with his mentor Professor Peter Timms.

Dr Samuel Phillips has published over 50 papers and reviews in peer-reviewed international scientific journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine (2021), The Lancet Infectious Diseases (2018), the Journal of the American Medical Association (2020), the International Journal of Cancer (2017), and The Journal of Infectious diseases (2022). His papers have been cited over 960 times and he has a h-index of 18.
