Harriot Beazley is an A/Professor in Human Geography at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), and a Leadership Team member of the UniSC Indigenous and Transcultural Research Centre. Her professional responsibilities include Discipline Leader of the Global Sustainable Development Major in the School of Law and Society (SLS), teaching, research, and contributing to the development of the BA Arts program in the SLS. Harriot has over 30 years of experience working as a community participation consultant and child protection advisor on International Developments projects in Southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia) and the Pacific.
In terms of PhD Supervision, Harriot is an experienced PhD supervisor (and PhD Mentor Supervisor), supervising topics related to social justice, gender and identity, gender and disaster management, social protection, children’s geographies, children’s rights, child protection in international development contexts, intercultural communication and community-based interventions. Her current PhD students are working on research projects based in Australia, Mexico, Vanuatu, South Africa and Japan.
Harriot is also a member of the Consortium for Street Children (CSC) Expert Research Forum in London (UK), where her role focusses on advocacy and research related to the rights of street connected children. The Consortium is a global network of non-government organisations (NGOs) and academics working together to promote the rights and well-being of children living and working on the streets in Africa, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia. Harriot’s role involves contributing to initiatives that inform social policy, raising awareness on the rights of street connected children, and supporting research on issues faced by street children, especially street connected girls.
In addition to these professional roles, for the past 20 years Harriot has been on the Editorial Board of the Routledge journal Children's Geographies, where she currently serves as a Co-Editor. The journal focuses on research related to children’s experiences, their geographies, and the ways in which places, environments, and contexts influence children's lives. Her responsibilities include reviewing and contributing to the academic content and direction of the journal,
