Education: Access and Equity
SCS 287
(Offering: 2003)
Description
What is the purpose of education, how does it work and who are its winners and losers? This sociology of education course highlights contemporary transformations in education such as the effects of globalisation, economic rationalism, enterprise culture, marketisation, managerialism, restructuring and the new knowledge economy. An understanding of education in these terms is essential if we are to assess the successes and failures of the past, while remaining open to the opportunities, challenges and actions necessary to secure an accessible and equitable education for all in the future.
