Contemporary Workplace Issues
HRM 320 (Offering: 2003)

Description

The course commences with an overview of the international context of employment legislation, by examining the employment-related aspects of major United Nations and International Labour Organisation treaties and conventions in order to establish the external imperatives that affect the management of the employment relationship. The history and content of current federal laws which pertain to the employment relationship, focussing in particular on occupational health and safety and equal opportunity legislation, will then be outlined. Students will critically appraise the effects of these laws through analysis of cases heard in various courts and tribunals and their policy implications for organisations. The emerging issues affecting the employment relationship, including organisational restructuring, the changing nature of work and ethics will also be examined.
