OVERVIEW
Six of the world's seven marine turtle species either live on K'gari or travel up to thousands of kilometres to nest on the Island's beaches.
Sandy Cape at the northern tip of K'gari is an important location for courtship and mating and supports a small number of nesting endangered loggerhead and the vulnerable green sea turtle.
Like other sea turtles, green sea turtles migrate long distances between feeding grounds and hatching beaches. Females crawl out on beaches, dig nests and lay eggs during the night. Later, hatchlings emerge and scramble into the water. They may live to 80 years in the wild.
