Carpet snakes are variable in colour and pattern. Most are olive green, with pale, dark edged blotches, stripes or cross bands. They live in open forests, rainforests, coastal heaths and suburbia.

They are active day and night and can be found on the ground, in trees or buildings. They feed on frogs, lizards, birds and mammals.
