USC’s smaller class sizes mean lots of interaction with your lecturers and other students. Our graduating students tell us that’s one reason why they’ve given us a five-star teaching rating in the Good Uni Guide, for 10 years in a row.

Teaching
Good to know:
The size of your class can influence how much personal contact you have with your lecturers. So work out if you prefer to be more anonymous, or want more one-on-one time before you choose a uni.
Good to ask:
- How many students go to your uni?
- How many other students will be in my class?
- What’s the process for contacting lecturers and tutors? How flexible is it?

LEARNING
Good to know:
When comparing degrees, you’ll notice a lot of unis teach the same stuff. So the important question isn’t what you’re taught, but rather how you’re taught.
Good to ask:
- What’s the balance between prac work and theory?
- How soon into my degree can I expect to do prac work?
- What sets your (degree name) apart from the same degree at other unis?
- Does your degree meet professional accreditation standards?
- How does your uni incorporate new ways of thinking or doing things into degree content?
The more exposure you have to prac work, the more opportunities you get to improve your employability. That’s why USC includes as much hands-on experience as we can throughout in your degree.

VALUES
Good to know:
Just like any brand or business, each uni has its own personality. So to find the best fit, you need to work out if what’s important to you lines up with what’s important to them.
Good to ask:
- How would you describe your uni’s personality?
- How is your uni different to other unis?
- What are your university’s core values?
- What’s the campus vibe?… Open? Friendly? Serious?
At USC we see opportunity everywhere, especially in our students. Our number one goal is to help you reach your full potential and we do that by treating each student as an individual. So you’re supported and encouraged to rise, and shine in your own way. We think that’s why we score some of the best student satisfaction rates in the country.

WORKING
Good to know:
An internship or part-time work in your profession will bring your studies to life and give you first-hand experience in a workplace. It can also lead to a graduate role so it’s important to find out how, or if, the uni can help you connect with employers.
Good to ask:
- How will your uni prepare me for my career while I’m studying?
- What about after I graduate?
- What organisations do you partner with from my profession?
- Are there opportunities for me to try different roles, or multiple internships?
The knowledge economy means great jobs can happen anywhere, and that is especially true of growing regional areas like the Sunshine Coast. One example of jobs growth is the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital, which is part of Australia’s single largest health precinct – and they’re not just health jobs, either.

LIVING
Good to know:
Living locally provides better conditions for studying. And besides study, uni is also about making new friends and sharing new experiences. So, you need to know how easy it is to meet people, get around, and what opportunities you have to expand your general life experience.
Good to ask:
- Besides classes, what opportunities will I have to meet new people?
- Where do most students live? On campus? Close by?
- How does your uni engage with the local community or local events?
USC is small enough to have a great community feel, large enough to offer students all sorts of extra-curricular activities and we happen to be located in a pretty special part of the world when you want to get away from the books for a while.

SUPPORT
Good to know:
Every uni offers some support to their students. So the question comes down to how much support they offer, and how you access it.
Good to ask:
- How will your uni help me get into the degree I want to do?
- Is there some kind of study training for new students?
- If I feel like I’ve made the wrong choice once I’ve started, what do I do?
Success often depends on readiness. That’s why USC offers the Tertiary Preparation Pathway. It’s a free, six-month study skills course and it’s the perfect way to upgrade your results, get the skills you need to smash your degree, or give uni a try without making a big commitment.
